A FAILED ATTEMPT TO PHOTOGRAPH REALITY by Julian Slagman
A failed attempt to photograph reality
solo exhibition by Julian Slagman
11. - 26. April-2025
Opening and book launch: April 11th, 7-9 PM
Julian Slagman’s first solo exhibition in Denmark consists of 36 hand-printed, monochrome photographs. The exhibition takes its title from a text by artist Duane Michals, who explores the philosophical limitations of photography in capturing reality. Written in ink on photographic fibre paper, the text expresses skepticism about the medium’s ability to depict anything beyond surface appearances.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a RISO-printed catalogue which will be launched at the opening. The book features images alongside texts by Julian Slagman and Avi Bolotinsky. The handmade gelatine silver prints on view at Bladr are available in an edition of 1 + 1 artist proof.
Julian Slagman (b. 1993, Hamburg) is a German-Dutch photographer and artist currently based in Malmö. He studied photography at Neue Schule für Fotografie in Berlin, HFBK Hamburg, and HDK-Valand in Gothenburg. His work has been exhibited throughout Europe, including at Deichtorhallen Hamburg and Paris Photo. His debut book, Looking at My Brother, published by Disko Bay (DK) in 2024, has been nominated for the 2025 Swedish Photobook Prize.
