I LOOP

Solo Show

by Julie Riis Andersen

Curated by Rebecca Krasnik

April 22 - May 7, 2022

With the exhibition In LOOP, Julie Riis Andersen focuses on paper as a subgenre within printmaking.

The exhibition presents the paper as part of a circular economy of limited resources. What was once trash can be recycled and given new meaning and value.

In this circuit, the neutral starting point of the blank paper has the potential to carry new functions and meanings, which in turn can be destroyed, reused, and re-emerged as new blank paper.

For the exhibition, Julie Riis Andersen has cast new paper that carries visible fragments from the paper's previous use and functions. Decorations and illustrations from the recycled paper have been enlarged and reprinted. Thus, it is not only the paper as material that is recreated, but also visual motifs that are recycled, lose their function and meaning, and a new value is added.

Julie Riis Andersen works with graphics both in a classical sense and conceptually in the form of wall wallpapers and spatial installations. The impact of industrial and technological developments on man is a recurring theme in her work. She examines what is forgotten when new tools and technologies come into being, and difference between the unique and the accessible and mass-produced.

Julie Riis Andersen is a graduate of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and last year received the Niels Wessel Bagge’s Artists' Foundation's honorary scholarship. She has exhibited at Vermillion Sands, c4 projects, and has participated in Louisiana Revy Op Art and kinetic art.
