IN THIS MEADOW, ON THIS GREEN HILL, LIVSE A GOD, WE DON’T KNOW WHO

Solo Show

by Mai S. Keldsen

January 12 - January 29, 2023

The first solo exhibition of 2023 - “In this meadow, on this green hill, lives a god, we don't know who (I denne lund, på denne grønklædte bakke bor der en gud, man ved ikke hvem)” by Mai S. Keldsen is opening this thursday 12th of January.

The title of the exhibition is a quote from Vergil, reproduced in Aksel Haaning's book Nature's Light and it refers to the sacred places which have previously formed the framework for sacrifices and ceremonies and which were considered a threat by Christianity, as a sensual and pagan worship in opposition to the religious worship of the christian God, and were therefore often removed or reduced to wilderness. These wildernesses are today part of the anthropocene landscape, but contain a biodiversity often suffocated in industrialized agriculture and the almost total cultivation of nature. Its atmosphere and flora stands as a link to the sanctuaries of the past.

The exhibition features a series of photographic portraits of holy places, wilderness and garden waste. In the photographed locations, the artist has collected fallen corps, e.g. walnuts, elderberries, from which they subsequently made ink which is used for coloring filters that are used during the photographing process. The wilderness is thus photographed through its own colors and materials. The ink is also used in pieces of text, fragments of which are also included in the exhibition.

Mai S. Keldsen (1991) lives and works in Copenhagen. She holds an MFA from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (2020) and has participated in the ISP at Maumaus Escola des Artes Visuais (2016). Her work unfolds in photography, artist-books and installations. Keldsen's practise reflects on aesthetic, historical and spiritual aspects of landscapes through a both playful and conceptual photographic method that uses no digital post-production. She engages performatively with specific geographies and, through often romanticized sceneries, deals critically with questions of position, storytelling and sustainability.

Mai has had solo-shows in Greece, Portugal and Germany and received the Caspar David Friedrich Prize in 2018.
