Freud casually mentions in the preface to August Aichhorn’s Wayward Youth that it is commonly known that there are three impossible professions: Education, therapy, and government. Impossible, not least, because none of them are terminable, but will have to proceed beyond their own boundaries. Unable to hit what they are aiming for, unable to complete what they are trying to do. It is conspicuous that the artistic, the poetic work is not included in this series. The artistic work is possible, apparently; it can actually say what it means. Hit the mark. Succeed.

This stands in stark contrast to any actual experience one might have working with art. Art-endeavours might be the most failed of all. Unsuccessful or abandoned on central premises to be able to happen at all. Not to become realistic in relation to some unachievable ambition, but because their endeavour quite directly is to pose a question to something that does not answer, and then pose it again. So maybe art is not mentioned in Freud’s series, because it in a much more fundamental sense presupposes its own impossibility; the enterprise cannot succeed unless it is broken off too early. Art is a rupture, something that undermines one’s own position, and is in this sense as interminable as it is impossible.

This nonetheless leaves the artistic labour. It is possible to work, and this labour itself can be exhibited. If you exhibit several such laborious endeavours next to each other, their impossibilities begin to overlap, their lacks begin to converse. Landskabet og erindring is an exhibition of such a conversation. Eight works that have an impossible conversation about change, about reshaping, about walking and moving, about knowledge and silence and a thousand words that try to say less than a picture. The exhibition is an examination of an improbable place, a heath that is not yet determined as to what it might someday become, but which, in this undecidedness, invites a continuation of its impossible work.
